“It was important for me to create personal touches within the room in order to make this a unique cinema experience for every member of the family.”
Technology integrator, AVNS Ltd, collaborated with AWE to transform an old games room into a family-friendly media room that can be used for watching films, sport, and gaming by this three-generation family.
The brief was to create a modern media room that boasts statement design and an immersive cinematic experience. Since the new space was to be used as a multipurpose room – for gaming sessions as well as hosting movie nights with the family – the new area needed to accommodate everyone’s purposes and offer a range of experiences, unique to each family member.
AVNS had previously worked with the client over ten years ago, so when they were considering this new project, they once again contacted the AVNS team for their help. Following several briefing meetings and visits to the property, as well as taking the family to past projects to demonstrate different solutions, the family were clear on their requirements for the new space.
The challenge for AVNS began when redesigning the layout of the room. With the shape being square and the floor needing to accommodate two tiered seating, it was paramount for the room to feel spacious yet provide all the aspects of the homeowner’s brief.
With the project plan in place and the room design set, AVNS approached AWE to discuss which brands and products they could propose to give this room the ultimate home cinema wow factor, within the allocated budget.
Working closely with the team at AWE, AVNS selected an Epson TW9400 projector, Euroscreen VSD300W projection screen, KEF T305 speakers, a KEF T2 subwoofer, KEF Ci160ER ceiling speakers, a Marantz SR6014 AV receiver, a URC HomePro Kit with R700 remote, and Philips Hue LED strips.
AVNS opted for an Epson EH-TW9400 home cinema projector, which combines the latest imaging technologies to bring films and games to life, in extraordinary detail. This was paired with a VSD300W 135” Frame Vision projection screen from Euroscreen, because it provides an attractive matt black Vel-Tex wrapped framework for the projected image, with the Ambient Light Rejecting React 3 fabric providing the best viewing experience, even without complete blackout in the room.
To intensify the viewing experience, a key component of the renovation was the superb sound system, also sourced from AWE. Powered by a Marantz SR-6014 9 channel AV receiver, a range of ultra slim KEF speakers were integrated around the room to create an immersive audio experience. This included five KEF T-305 wall-mounted speakers and four KEF Ci160ER in-ceiling height speakers. These were complemented by a KEF T2 subwoofer to produce fast, accurate bass. These all work seamlessly together to provide Dolby Atmos &DTS-X immersive audio in a 5.1.4 configuration, whilst keeping a slimline profile complementing the interior of the room.
Providing simplistic control to satisfy the homeowner’s needs, whole-room control was achieved using the AWE-supplied URC MX HomePro Kit with a R700 Remote. This easy to use, versatile solution controls all of the devices and lighting in the room, making it a breeze for all of the family. Instead of having multiple remotes, the URC R700 Remote boasts a vivid 2” LCD display with custom onscreen menus to suit the preferences of the family, as well as long battery life and performance.
Understanding that the family would be spending countless hours together in the media room, delivering bespoke details was at the core of the design for AVNS. For the lighting, Philips HUE LED strips are sown around the light box, with GU10 spotlights to project independent colour around the room and in the bar area for an extra special touch in order to create a variety of scenes.
For added safety and security, AVNS installed a biometric door handle into the room, which is able to record each family member’s thumb print so that the parents can keep tabs on who has been in the room.
As fans of DC movies in particular, AVNS also crafted a custom Gotham sign for the family, as well as bespoke cinema seats that not only reclined, but massaged, heated, and featured drinks holders that keep the family’s beverages hot or cold. Together with a feature bar, black-out blinds, and sweet dispensers, the room is truly one of a kind that provides everything the homeowner was looking for, transforming the old games room into something really special.
“When the family walked in as I revealed the new room, their faces lit up. They exclaimed how fantastic it looked and said it was everything they imagined, but even better. It was important for me to create personal touches within the room in order to make this a unique cinema experience for every member of the family and because I was trusted with this transformation, I had the duty of using products I believed in from a trusted supplier and that would make the room a one of a kind,” comments Chaz Dhillon, Director of AVNS Ltd.
